Vehicle recovery and towing, taken wherever you need it.
If your vehicle can't or shouldn't be driven, tell Recovru where it is and where it needs to go. Vetted operators nearby send one price each for the whole job, you choose one and track them to you, and your vehicle is loaded and taken to a garage, your home or the nearest open petrol station.
Recovery and Towing
Operators nearby send one price each and you choose one. The price you choose is the total you pay, with any VAT the operator charges included. Your card is held when you accept and charged when the job is done. If no operator nearby quotes, nothing is held or charged. Cancelling can cost a charge once the operator has set off: see Cancellation and Refunds and the Cancellation Rates.
The Recovru app opens in your browser today; iPhone and Android apps are coming soon.
Recovru is not an emergency service. If you are in danger, call 999.
What happens when you ask for recovery
- Tell us where the vehicle is, what state it is in and where it needs to go. Asking is free and commits you to nothing.
- Operators nearby who carry your kind of vehicle send one price each for the whole job, including the trip to your drop-off, with the time they can reach you.
- Accept a price and the money is held, not taken. Follow your operator on the live map and message them in the app.
- When they arrive, you give them your 4-digit arrival code, which confirms they are the operator you booked. Your vehicle is loaded and taken to your drop-off.
What recovery and towing covers
Recovery is for a vehicle that cannot or should not be driven. It is the right request for any of these, each a choice in the app:
- Won't move
- It will not go into gear, the brakes are locked on, or it will not start and will not roll
- Stuck or grounded
- Winched out of mud, snow or a ditch
- Wheel damage
- A damaged wheel and no spare, taken to a garage
- Transmission failure
- The gearbox or driveline has gone
- A non-runner
- A vehicle that will not start, moved to where you need it
- A dangerous spot
- A vehicle stopped somewhere unsafe to leave it
- The drop-off
- An address you pin, or the nearest open petrol station, found when you ask
Travelling with it
Most recovery trucks have room for one or two passengers. Tell the app if anyone needs a lift, a child seat or help into a high cab, and bring the car seat if you can, because most trucks do not carry one. Operators quote knowing it, but a seat is not promised.
What the app asks for a recovery
After where the vehicle is, the kind of road and how safe it is there, whether it has hit anything and which vehicle it is, the app asks:
- Where is it right now?
- At the side of a road, on a motorway hard shoulder or in an emergency area, in a live lane, on a driveway, in an open or a multi-storey car park, inside a building, or off road. It decides which truck can reach it.
- If there is a height barrier, how high is it?
- Asked for car parks and buildings. Most recovery trucks will not fit under a multi-storey barrier, so read the sign at the entrance.
- What state is it in?
- Whether it starts and drives, and anything that stops it rolling: no neutral, a stuck handbrake, locked steering, a locked wheel, a flat tyre, no brakes or no keys. If it will not roll, the operator brings wheel skates.
- Anything else the operator should know?
- Accident damage, not run for a while, not road legal, and who needs a lift with it.
- Your vehicle's own questions
- A van, a motorbike, a lorry, a bus, a mobility vehicle or an electric vehicle brings a few more, such as a lorry's plated weight or an electric car's charge.
- Where does it go?
- An address you pin, or “Nearest petrol station”.
Have these ready
- The keys, or where they are if they need collecting
- The height on any car park barrier sign
- The address the vehicle is going to
- Your vehicle's registration, so the app can fill in the rest
Staying safe while you wait
- In a live lane, put your hazard lights on. If you can get out safely, leave by the side away from traffic and wait behind the barrier. If you cannot, stay in with your seat belt on and call 999.
- On a hard shoulder or in an emergency area, get out on the side away from traffic and wait behind the barrier, not in the vehicle.
- Anywhere else, get the vehicle off the road if you can, put your hazard lights on if it is in the way, and do not stand between it and oncoming traffic. A warning triangle goes at least 45 metres behind it, never on a motorway.
- If the brakes do not work and it is on a slope, keep everyone clear of it.
Who comes to recover it
Your request goes only to operators our staff have cleared for recovery who have told us they carry your kind of vehicle. Each is an independent business, checked before they can send you a single price:
- Identity
- Photo ID, matched to a live selfie
- Right to work
- Checked before their first job
- The business
- A company, or a sole trader on record. A VAT number is checked with HMRC and must match the business
- Screening
- Sanctions and politically exposed person lists
- Documents
- The insurance and licences each service needs, read by our staff
A clearance lasts only while the documents behind it are in date. Once one expires, that operator is not sent those requests.
For recovery, the Operator Terms also ask for:
- Public liability insurance of at least £1 million
- Motor insurance for their recovery vehicle that permits recovery for hire and reward
- Cover for your vehicle while it is on theirs or under tow
- Current inspection reports for their lifting machinery and lifting accessories
How the price for a recovery works
Recovru does not set prices. Each operator names one price for the whole job as you described it, and that price is the total you pay: it includes their attendance and assessment fee and any VAT, so nothing is added at the end. The quote says “inc VAT” when the operator is VAT registered and “No VAT to pay” when they are not. Your invoice or receipt is in the operator's name, issued by Recovru as their agent, and shows the VAT when there is any. There is no booking fee and no card fee, and you can take any price or none.
Your drop-off is set before the request goes out, so every price already covers the trip. Your vehicle's size and state, and where it is, matter too, which is why the app asks.
Accept a price and the money is held, not taken, until the job is done. If the job turns out different, nothing extra is done or charged until you approve a revised price in the app. You pay the attendance and assessment fee, VAT included, instead of the price only if your operator arrives and cannot do the job because what you told us was materially inaccurate, left out something important or was misleading; the Terms of Use cap it.
Cancelling is free until your operator sets off, and for two minutes after you accept whatever they have done. After that the Cancellation Rates show how any charge is worked out, you see the exact figure before you confirm, and you never pay more than that figure. If your operator cancels, you pay nothing.
Your contract for the job is with the operator, and Recovru collects the payment as their agent. How It Works and Cancellation and Refunds have the detail.
Recovery or a roadside repair?
If the vehicle could be fixed where it stands, a roadside repair is often quicker: see Flat Battery, Tyres and Punctures or Vehicle Not Starting. If it has hit anything, even a kerb, it is always a recovery, and Accident Recovery explains why.
Not sure? Choose “Skip the questions: send me recovery” at the top of any request. It asks only where the vehicle is, which vehicle, one line about it and where it goes.
Vehicle recovery, explained
Recovery or a roadside repair: how to tell
Roadside help tries to get the vehicle going where it stands: a jump start, a spare wheel, fuel, a quick diagnosis. Recovery accepts that the vehicle should not go any further under its own power, and loads it onto a recovery truck to be taken somewhere else. Driving a vehicle that should have been carried is where most further damage, and most of the danger, comes from.
Recovery is almost always the safer choice when any of these is true:
- It has hit anything, even a kerb. Damage you cannot see, such as a bent suspension arm or a cracked wheel, can make it unsafe to drive, which is why the app always books recovery after an impact
- It will not move under its own power, or it will not go into neutral
- It is stuck or grounded: beached on a kerb, in mud or snow, or in a ditch
- A wheel is damaged and there is no usable spare
- The gearbox or transmission has failed
- It has stopped somewhere dangerous, such as a live lane with no hard shoulder
- It has been through deep water, or the wrong fuel has run through the engine
How a vehicle is moved
A flatbed, sometimes called a tilt and slide, carries the whole vehicle on a platform with all four wheels off the road. It is the usual choice for accident damage, non-runners and vehicles that must not be towed on their own wheels. An underlift, or spec lift, raises one axle and tows the vehicle on the other two: quicker to rig in a tight spot, and suitable only for some vehicles. A vehicle that will not roll, because the steering is locked, the handbrake is stuck or the keys are missing, is lifted onto wheel skates first.
Your operator chooses the method from what you tell the app, which is why it asks what state the vehicle is in and anything that stops it rolling. Say in your description if it is an automatic or four-wheel drive, or sits very low: towing some vehicles on their own wheels can damage the gearbox or the drivetrain.
Electric vehicles
Most electric cars must not be towed with their driven wheels on the road, because the motor turns with them, so they are usually carried with the wheels off the ground. Many will only roll in their tow or transport mode, which needs a little charge left to switch on. When your vehicle is electric, the app asks how much charge is left and whether it goes into transport mode, and if it will not, your operator knows to bring wheel skates.
A damaged main battery is a fire risk that can start hours later. If there is smoke, hissing or popping, get everyone well away from the vehicle and call 999.
Very low and valuable cars
Many sports and performance cars sit too low for a standard recovery truck: the nose meets the ramp before the wheels do. Tell the app if yours scrapes on speed bumps or has a nose lift, and whether you want it moved in a covered truck. Fewer operators run covered transport, so expect fewer prices back. Supercar Recovery and Prestige Transport goes further.
Lorries, buses, vans and motorbikes
Bigger and smaller vehicles each have their own questions. A lorry's plated weight decides which recovery vehicle can lift it, a bus has to be empty before it is lifted, a van's size and load decide the truck, and a trike or sidecar needs a car deck rather than a bike chock. Truck Recovery, Bus and Coach, Van Recovery and Motorcycle Recovery explain each one.
Questions
How much does car recovery cost?
Each operator prices the whole job from what you told the app, including the trip to your drop-off. You see the prices as they arrive, up to five at a time, each with its arrival time, before you choose. Each price is the total you pay, with any VAT the operator charges included. Recovru adds no booking fee.
Can my car go home rather than to a garage?
Yes. You pin the drop-off: a garage, your home, anywhere else, or the nearest open petrol station.
Can I travel with my vehicle?
Tell the app how many people need a lift. Most recovery trucks have room for one or two passengers, and operators quote knowing it, but a seat is not promised.
Will my car be towed or carried on a truck?
Your operator chooses the method from what you tell the app. Say if the vehicle is very low, electric, an automatic or four-wheel drive, or will not roll, so they bring the right equipment.
Can I book a recovery for later?
Yes, up to 30 days ahead, and your request goes to operators an hour before the time you choose. Recovru is for vehicles that need recovering, not a delivery service.
