Recovru

Mobility vehicle recovery and repair for scooters, wheelchairs and accessible vehicles.

If a powered wheelchair, a mobility scooter or a wheelchair-accessible vehicle has broken down, tell Recovru what it is and whether you need to travel with it. Operators nearby send one price each to recover it, or to fix it where the fault allows, and they see what you told us before they quote.

Mobility Vehicles

A road, a junction, a postcode or a place. Leave it empty and you choose the service again on the map.

Operators nearby send one price each and you choose one. The price you choose is the total you pay, with any VAT the operator charges included. Your card is held when you accept and charged when the job is done. If no operator nearby quotes, nothing is held or charged. Cancelling can cost a charge once the operator has set off: see Cancellation and Refunds and the Cancellation Rates.

The Recovru app opens in your browser today; iPhone and Android apps are coming soon.

Recovru is not an emergency service. If you are in danger, call 999.

What happens when you ask for help

  1. Tell us where it is, what it is and whether the person who uses it needs to travel with it. Asking is free and commits you to nothing.
  2. Operators nearby send one price each for the whole job, knowing what you told us, with the time they can reach you.
  3. Accept a price and the money is held, not taken. Follow your operator on the live map and message them in the app.
  4. When they arrive, you give them your 4-digit arrival code, which confirms they are the operator you booked. It is recovered to where you choose, or fixed where it stands.

Mobility vehicles, recovered or fixed

Four very different vehicles share this service, so the app asks which yours is.

Powered wheelchairs
Recovered with the person who uses it in mind
Pavement scooters
Small mobility scooters for pavements
Road scooters
Larger scooters with lights, for the road as well as the pavement
Accessible cars and vans
Wheelchair-accessible cars and vans, recovered like any vehicle of their size
A repair where it stands
Choose the problem in the app, such as a flat battery, with the mobility vehicle as the vehicle

Travelling with it

A recovery truck's cab is a climb, and a wheelchair cannot go in one. Only some operators have a vehicle that can carry someone who needs to stay in their wheelchair, so the app asks before anyone quotes, and fewer operators may be able to come.

The Accessibility Statement sets out what Recovru commits to at the roadside, including an assistance dog travelling with you at no charge, and what happens if the recovery vehicle cannot carry you safely.

What the app asks about the mobility vehicle

After where it is and how safe it is there, whether it has hit anything and which vehicle it is, the app asks the recovery questions and these:

What is it?
Required: a powered wheelchair, a small mobility scooter for pavements, a larger road scooter with lights, a wheelchair-accessible car or van, or something else.
Does the person who uses it need to travel with it?
No; yes, and they can climb into a truck cab; yes, but they need help or a step; yes, and they need to stay in a wheelchair; or yes, and they cannot leave the broken one. Operators who cannot carry a passenger in a wheelchair can see that before they quote.
Where does it go?
Home, a repairer or anywhere you pin.

Have these ready

  • What the vehicle is, and whether the person who uses it can move to a seat
  • The address it is going to
  • If it is leased, what your lease includes: check with your provider first

Staying safe while you wait

  • If a road scooter stops on the road, get yourself onto the pavement or away from traffic if you safely can, and keep its lights on if it is dark.
  • If you drive a wheelchair-accessible vehicle and a disability stops you leaving it safely on a motorway, stay in with your seat belt and hazard lights on and call 999.
  • If you are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired, the Highway Code recommends registering for the 999 text service before you travel.
  • Someone else can request help for you: it does not have to be the person with the vehicle.

Who comes

A recovery goes only to operators our staff have cleared for recovery who have told us they carry mobility vehicles, and a repair where it stands to operators cleared for roadside work. Each is an independent business, checked before they can send you a single price:

Identity
Photo ID, matched to a live selfie
Right to work
Checked before their first job
The business
A company, or a sole trader on record. A VAT number is checked with HMRC and must match the business
Screening
Sanctions and politically exposed person lists
Documents
The insurance and licences each service needs, read by our staff

A clearance lasts only while the documents behind it are in date. Once one expires, that operator is not sent those requests.

For recovery, the Operator Terms also ask for:

  • Public liability insurance of at least £1 million
  • Motor insurance for their recovery vehicle that permits recovery for hire and reward
  • Cover for your vehicle while it is on theirs or under tow
  • Current inspection reports for their lifting machinery and lifting accessories

How the price for a mobility vehicle works

Recovru does not set prices. Each operator names one price for the whole job as you described it, and that price is the total you pay: it includes their attendance and assessment fee and any VAT, so nothing is added at the end. The quote says “inc VAT” when the operator is VAT registered and “No VAT to pay” when they are not. Your invoice or receipt is in the operator's name, issued by Recovru as their agent, and shows the VAT when there is any. There is no booking fee and no card fee, and you can take any price or none.

Operators see your answer about who needs to travel with it, and price for the vehicle they need to bring. Operators who cannot carry a passenger in a wheelchair can see that before they quote. Recovru adds no charge of its own for any adjustment.

Accept a price and the money is held, not taken, until the job is done. If the job turns out different, nothing extra is done or charged until you approve a revised price in the app. You pay the attendance and assessment fee, VAT included, instead of the price only if your operator arrives and cannot do the job because what you told us was materially inaccurate, left out something important or was misleading; the Terms of Use cap it.

Cancelling is free until your operator sets off, and for two minutes after you accept whatever they have done. After that the Cancellation Rates show how any charge is worked out, you see the exact figure before you confirm, and you never pay more than that figure. If your operator cancels, you pay nothing.

Your contract for the job is with the operator, and Recovru collects the payment as their agent. How It Works and Cancellation and Refunds have the detail.

Questions

Can I travel with my mobility scooter?

Tell the app, and say whether you need to stay in a wheelchair. A recovery truck's cab cannot take a wheelchair and only some operators have a vehicle that can, so operators quote knowing it. The Accessibility Statement says what Recovru does if the recovery vehicle cannot carry you safely.

What about a Motability or leased vehicle?

Check with your provider what your lease includes first. If you then need help through Recovru, book it like any other vehicle.

Does Recovru charge for an adjustment?

No. Recovru adds no charge of its own for any adjustment, and you never have to take a phone call: everything can be done by message or live chat, as the Accessibility Statement says. Operators set their own prices, for the vehicle they need to bring.

Can someone book help for me?

Yes. Someone else can request help for you. It does not have to be the person with the vehicle.
